As I write this I'm looking out at the same back yard I've been looking at for the past six years. It's a very familiar scene complete with five dogs, countless eucalyptus trees, and bougainvillea petals littering the grass. My back yard is the stage where so many of my thoughts get sorted out. Whether I'm coming back from graduate studies in religion, from conversations with people who care about life and God, from working with teens in inner city New York, from sharing my music in concert, or from spending time with close friends in Baja California, I come back here again and again with a new collection of thoughts and ideas.
This past year I've been able to document some of my recent thinking on this new album. What I know for sure is that God is crazy about me and about you. And in understanding the value God places on my life and yours, I celebrate being a child of God made in love for love. I'm learning to better appreciate the people in my life-to better value their love and commitment to me. I'm learning to better value the stranger I see in the supermarket or driving next to me on the freeway.
I'm learning to live this life with both feet in. I no longer live life in anticipation of what might be or what could be, but try to see the gift of living today, enjoying the kingdom of God here and now. Life doesn't play favorites and waits for no one, but I can celebrate life in the face of disappointment. I'm willing to face tragedy with a song in my heart though my fists may be clenched.
When somebody asks me, "What have you been up to?" I can answer, "Learning some of the things you'll find on this record-learning more about life and the enthusiastic love God has for you and me." I hope as you listen you will come away with thoughts of loving yourself more deeply and how in love God is with you right now, just the way you are.
